MJTA junior team wins USTA state title!

I took two teams from representing the Mt. Juliet Tennis Association to participate in the USTA Tennessee Team Tennis State Championship this past weekend in Knoxville. These are players who participate in the evening high school tennis program. Both Teams participated in the 18 & Under intermediate division. Matches consist of boy’s singles, girls singles, boys doubles, girls doubles, and mixed doubles.

The Players for the Blue Team are:

  • Kelsie Wood

  • Rachel Sandoval

  • Rachael Walker

  • Sarah Beth Walker

  • Josh Wagler

  • Marc Sandoval

  • Landis White

  • Matthew Startup

  • Coach, Hugo Sandoval

  • Team Manager, Bobby Wood

They are a very young team. They all played extremely well and came out in the middle of their pool.

Players from the Red Team are:

  • Hannah Johnson

  • Kate Walker

  • Katie Chunn

  • Jenna Hazelwood

  • Hunter Harwell

  • Caleb Wagler

This team was the defending state champions and this year was able to win another State Championship.

Update on MJTA Red Team!

The Mt. The team played very well and placed 2nd in their pool and 3rd overall. The members of the team represented five different area schools.

Beginning October 5th through November 9th, the USTA is offering a High School Team Tennis League on Sunday afternoons at the Donelson YMCA Indoor Tennis Center . The cost is $35 and includes team shirt, balls, and court time.

Eligibility Requirements:
Players should be in the 8th through 12th grade. Players do NOT have to live or go to school in Wilson County; do NOT have to be on the high school team and do NOT have to be a member of the YMCA to play; however, they will need to be a member of the USTA. 5. click “Click here to Register for a Team Tennis Program”
  6. fill in: Southern, Tennessee, Mt. Juliet

  8. choose 18 and under Intermediate
  9. and then complete form please include your email address !!
If players already know who they want to play with, please ALSO email me their requested list of teammates; otherwise I will assign teams.

Match Format:
The fall league is set up differently from regular high school tennis matches. It’s quick, it’s fun, it’s designed to keep kids playing tennis in the off season without taking up a lot of time. It's set up more like Billie Jean King's World Team Tennis. Each team will have 2-4 boys and 2-4 girls. They play one set of men's doubles, one set of women’s' doubles, one set of mixed doubles, one set of men’s singles, and one set of women’s singles (MD, WD, XD, MS, and WS). A set in this league is first to 5 games. They play no ad. The team with the most total games, wins the match. Example below: even though Team A won 3 out of 5 sets, Team B is the overall match winner since they won the most total games.

MD WD XD MS WS Total

Team A 5 1 5 0 5 16
Team B 3 5 4 5 4 21
